Whether capital structure can be optimised to minimise the weighted average cost of capital is one of the most fiercely contested issues in corporate finance. It is generally accepted that there is an optimal capital structure but difficult to ascertain what that optimum is. For many corporates, the ability to maintain financial flexibility is as critical as minimising the weighted average cost of capital.
