Mentoring Scheme

Mentoring scheme for ACT members and students

Are you looking for support, advice and guidance on the next step in your career or on managing difficult situations? Or perhaps you're an experienced treasurer and could share your experience to help other members?

As part of the ACT's commitment to support members' professional development, we've launched a new mentoring scheme, Mentor Me, for our members and students. This is provided for the ACT by Mentor Match Me.

Our mentoring scheme is designed to help members and students with the ‘soft skills’ needed to succeed. We encourage all members to take part: from students who are new to treasury or the ACT, to our retired members, who will be able to pass on their experiences and life skills.

The mentoring scheme matches members and students with each other. Our online platform will help to make the initial match, based on areas of common interest and experience.

How do I sign up?

  1. Read the Terms and Conditions below and click the ACCEPT button
  2. This will direct you to the ACT Mentor Me website.
  3. Click on the 'Create new account' link on the right hand side of the page (you cannot use your ACT website login for the Mentor Me scheme). You will need your membership number to do this, which can be found in your account information.

Once you have created an account you can set up your profile and the system will then offer matches with suitable mentors or mentees.

About the ACT Mentoring Scheme

The mentoring scheme matches members and students with each other. Our online platform will help to make the initial match, based on areas of common interest and experience. There will also be resources and tools with advice and guidance to help you get the most from the experience.

Who is the scheme for?

The mentoring scheme is open to all ACT members and students.

What's in it for a mentor?

  • Sharing your knowledge and experience to help others
  • Developing your coaching and communication skills
  • Gaining CPD
  • Growing your professional network

Why become a mentee?

  • Learn from an experienced treasurer
  • Get confidential career advice
  • Gain a wealth of knowledge and skills from their mentor which can contribute to your CPD

What should I expect from the matching service?

The matching service works on the following parameters:

  • Self-management and accountability

  • Influencing
  • Working effectively with others
  • Team management
  • Career progression
  • Strategic thinking
  • Leadership skills
  • Motivation
  • Networking skills
  • Managing up in your organisation
  • Handling conflict

Both the mentor and mentee are asked to specify the areas they would like to discuss.

The mentor provides a career outline and a profile. The mentee then provides a profile and proposal, outlining what they would like to get support in.

When a mentor and mentee are matched their profile and proposal are exchanged. The parties then decide whether they are happy to work together and agree (or not) to be connected.

We recommend that you set out some parameters at the outset to check how you will work together. Key things to agree at this stage include:

  • How will you communicate – by email, Skype etc
  • How often will you communicate – we recommend an hour a month.

  • What will be expected of me as a mentee or mentor?

We recommend our mentors and mentees commit to working together for an hour a month. Initially both parties should agree a target objective for the mentoring relationship, and we would recommend using the road map provided within the scheme to help agree objectives and structure your mentoring journey.

What support will the ACT give?

Our online platform will help to make the initial match, based on common interest and experience. When joining the scheme, mentees can specify areas of knowledge and expertise they would like to improve. The platform also contains a wealth of resources and tools with advice and guidance to help you make the most of your experience.

    Terms and conditions

We are working with an external provider called PLD to provide the mentoring scheme. Please note that the ACT Mentor Me scheme is a software application licensed to ACT but owned and operated by PLD.

In addition to PLD’s Terms and Conditions for the use of its software applications, your use of the ACT Mentor Me scheme is also governed by the following terms of use:
    1. You agree that you shall use the ACT Mentor Me scheme solely for your personal, non-commercial use, and you shall not advertise or offer to buy or sell goods or services for any commercial purpose in your use of the ACT Mentor Me scheme.
    2. The ACT does not endorse, and shall not be liable for, any advice you receive from a mentor. Where appropriate, you should seek professional or specialist advice before relying on a mentor’s advice.
    3. You will be responsible for payment of all costs you incur in connection with any communication between you and a mentor or mentee, so the ACT recommends that you use email, skype or other free-to-use communication methods. For the avoidance of doubt, if you choose another form of communication, such as telephone, you will bear the cost and the ACT will not pay any costs incurred under any circumstances.
    4. You will be asked to supply your first name, surname and email address to PLD. The data you supply to PLD may be transferred to, and stored at, a destination outside the European Economic Area (EEA) depending on who you are matched with. By submitting your personal data, you agree to this transfer, storing and processing.

I confirm that I have read these terms of use and agree to abide by them.
