We can all relax now. The frenzied excitement of the World Cup is over and readers can instead enjoy the gentle ping of ball on racket and the crack of willow on leather, or alternatively head off to sunnier climes for some hard-earned rest and relaxation. While you are sitting on your sunbed or lilo, your thoughts may turn to what you want to do with your life when you return. We have kindly provided you with plenty of food for thought in our Careers Spotlight.
You can read the success stories of members who have made it to the top of the profession. There is a helpful guide on how to assess whether you have what it takes to make it to the top and how you can go about it if you pass your self-assessment. As other people will be assessing your performance and value, and we analyse what benchmarking and performance analysis can bring to the treasury equation. We also provide our yearly guide to salaries. If you are looking to add value to really justify your salary, you should read the article on how to get into pensions. Finally, for any of you who are not yet aware of what the Association can offer you or your colleagues in the way of education and training, there is a useful overview of what is on offer.
I mentioned it last month but it is worthy of another reminder – the International Cash Management Survey for 2002 has been launched. Readers are encouraged to log on to www.treasurers.org/cashsurvey where you can find out more, see the results of the last two years’ surveys or complete the survey online. If you prefer a hard copy, please contact Nicky Harvey on 020 7213 0706.
Although the July/August double edition might give the impression that the editorial and production team has a break, I can assure you that the time will be well used. A number of our major projects happen in the autumn and plenty of planning is needed.
First of all, we have begun researching our Deals of the Year. Initially, we shall ask our banking contacts for their favourites (trying to persuade them that biggest is not always best). The first panel meeting will then discuss the merits of the deals proposed. The October issue will include a shortlist giving readers some ideas and background before selecting their own favourites. The final selection will be announced at the Association’s Annual Dinner, with comprehensive write-ups in the December edition.
Next year’s Handbook is also in the planning stage. It is already a mine of information and practical guidance – dig it out and have a look! – which provides value to all. It should however have a much wider audience, and the time is now right to take it a stage further and let it become a ‘bible’ for treasury, no matter where you practice, whether in the UK, Germany, Finland or South Africa. Watch out for further developments.
The message from the editorial team is enjoy your summer, and think of us working away on your behalf. And if you can contribute, you know where we are!
