After completed my MBA I knew I wanted to work in finance. I started my career as an intern, wanting to gain as much knowledge as possible but not sure yet which sub-department to specialise in. My three month internship with a leading telecom operator was in the fixed asset unit and, on completion of this, I was then offered a role in the payables team. After a year with this team I received another offer from the bank reconciliation team within the same organisation, and I moved to this team.
In 2013 I joined my current organisation where I was part of the treasury operations team. I really enjoyed working in treasury and quickly realised this was the right career path for me. While gaining hands-on experience in treasury operations, I also got the opportunity to work in treasury financing and treasury trade management. I started in a junior position and over a period of seven years I had three promotions. Today I am leading the department as treasury manager.
The best part of being in a treasury role is that no two days are the same! Working in treasury is never monotonous and gives me a new experience every day.
I really enjoy being able to use the skills I have learnt (both technical and business skills) to make a difference to the organisation. These skills not only help me professionally but personally as well. For instance, prompt decision making is required in my role which means making the right decision at the right time. To take calculated risks within treasury is essential and it is only possible if a person has the ability to make instant decisions. Similarly, analytical skills are a must in treasury, as are relationship management skills so that I can work with all stakeholders. I have become a better negotiator and a better listener as a result of the skills I have gained.
I like challenges and I always opt to handle the most difficult things as it gives me an opportunity to apply my skills, knowledge and to learn more. Currently we have no dedicated TMS solution so I designed an in-house treasury solution which provides all the required dashboards necessary for managing the operational work and results, which also has a one click report for management review. Since there is no integration with banks or ERP, the report is excel based and designed with the ERP report module so that the ledger data extracted can readily be incorporated in the dashboard. Today it is used as an essential data source for various critical financial reports and management information. I am delighted to have implemented this with no cost to the company.
1. This is just the start - continue to learn throughout your career.
2. Taking the Certificate in Treasury Fundamentals qualification will help you to gain an insight of treasury basics which will not only enhance your knowledge but it will also give you confidence.
3. It’s not just about gaining a certification - the qualifications are very interesting so enjoy the learning process.
I always believe that within a professional environment we learn many things from different people, the culture, and the overall working environment, so I can not name any one person who I would single out as my career hero.
Always stay positive. Even in the worst situation, there is always a way out and with a positive approach we not only keep our mind calm, but we also give good vibes to people around us.
I really enjoy the practical resources such as the webinars and newsletters. However, as a student of AMCT, I use the study platform the most. It’s so helpful in every way, easy to navigate and clear.

For me, being a member of the ACT is an important part of my professional development. It provides recognition of my skills and a brand name I am proud to be associated with.
I believe my phone and smart watch: my phone keeps me updated with emails while my smart watch keeps track of my fitness level.
As I am an AMCT student, my reading consists of the study materials! If I don’t understand anything I refer to more study material available online. I enjoy reading study books as much as I enjoy reading novels.
