Tony Hayward, Chief Executive of BP, has been awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT). This was presented to Dr Hayward at the ACT’s Annual Dinner on 14 November 2007 attended by 1,500 treasurers and bankers. The ACT awards on a very limited basis Honorary Fellowships to leading members of the financial and business community. These include Eddie George, former Governor of the Bank of England and Mary Keegan, Head of the Government Finance Profession, HM Treasury. Dr Hayward joined BP in 1982 with a PhD in Geology from the University of Edinburgh. He undertook a number of technical and commercial roles in BP Exploration in both the UK and overseas and was appointed Group Treasurer in 2000. He succeeded Lord Browne as Group Chief Executive in May 2007. The Student of Honour was also awarded at the dinner to Alison Stevens, Capital Markets Manager for National Grid. Alison achieved distinction in every paper of the MCT Advanced Diploma in Treasury, Risk and Corporate Finance. This is a senior level qualification relevant to those working in strategic areas of finance.

Career: Dr Hayward joined BP in 1982 and, following a series of technical and commercial roles in BP exploration in London, Aberdeen, Glasgow, France and China, in 1992 he moved to Colombia as exploration manager. In 1995, he became president of the BP group in Venezuela. In 1997, Dr Hayward returned to London as a director of BP exploration and in 1999, following the merger of BP and Amoco, he became a group vice president and a member of the upstream executive committee. He was appointed group treasurer in 2000, where his responsibilities included global treasury operations, corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. He was appointed an executive vice president in 2002, becoming chief executive officer for exploration and production later that year. He succeeded Lord Browne as group chief executive in May 2007.
