Payment transformation - global payment trends and the future landscape

Global payment trends are shifting as customers increasingly use any time, anywhere, any device payments. This is especially evident in the UK with increased functionality on smartphones and wearable technology. The majority of new payment methods are supported by the trusted payment infrastructure provided by banks.

The UK was one of the first countries in the world to enhance its payment infrastructure and offer Faster Payments, this initiative is now being replicated in the rest of Europe, the US and beyond. The UK’s experience is guiding others in their development of Immediate Payments, but with schemes being developed with divergent objectives and using different standards what might the cross border payments market look like tomorrow?

An unprecedented number of regulatory and industry initiatives are shaping the payments market. In Europe PSD2 is being developed, it promises to enrich the customer experience and presents challenges and opportunities for market participants.

The future payments landscape will be driven by meeting client demands using new agile technology. The potential offered by API’s, blockchain and wearable payment devices make tomorrows payment market an exciting one.
