In this series of blogs, I'm outlining some of the benefits of face-to-face learning and looking beyond the well-established fact that the traditional classroom environment gives students a better chance of passing an assessment, and instead exploring some of the more holistic gains.
The ACT launched a new set of qualifications during 2015 and we thought long and hard about how best to support our hard-working students. To this end we launched a brand new face-to-face offering on top of the classes we provide; those who can’t make the physical classes can now get some of that vital personal touch with ACT webinars and podcasts too.
In my first blog, I extolled the benefits of interaction with tutors and fellow learners. Next up is something that can really leave us floundering if it’s lacking; we all know how vital it is to stay motivated in anything we do and when it comes to getting yourself ready for an assessment, it’s easy to feel isolated.
The good news is that face-to-face studying with the ACT means you don’t have to go through it alone and can seek motivation from those who know the course best of all — the course tutor!
In a classroom environment, it’s really easy for the tutor to see who is struggling. It’s the tutor’s job to ensure that everybody gets involved equally and gets a fair share of attention during the workshops. This way you are able to have much more personal attention and individual focus on your learning needs. It can be really helpful when you don’t understand something and you know you can ask and get a sympathetic reaction and explanation from your tutor. Sometimes when you’re learning in an online environment, motivation can be lost very quickly because you can’t get that immediate feedback. It’s also very easy to get distracted with other things when you’re learning online - that Facebook page always needs a quick check!
The other thing that can help you to keep motivated in a classroom environment is the enthusiasm and the passion of the tutor for their subject. There’s nothing more inspirational than hearing real-life examples and experiences from someone who’s been there, done the job and can share with you their insights and tips. Although we try to make our study materials as interesting as possible it’s very hard to recreate this in an online environment.
In my next blog, read about the flexible approach to learning that the ACT’s face-to-face study options offer.
